MINNESOTA WATERS NEEDS
YOUR HELP |
|
Dear Friends, What an exciting year for
lake and stream conservation in our wonderful
state! The DNR is revising their Shoreland Rules
to provide increased protection for our lakes and
streams. Last spring, Senator Mary Olson passed
the Star Lakes bill to create an incentive program
that rewards lake and river citizen groups
for good stewardship practices. In November,
the voters approved a sales tax increase to fund
clean water, land conservation and the arts.
Minnesota Waters is proud to be the
statewide organization for citizens working to
improve our lakes and rivers. Through our
workshops, publications, grant programs,
consulting services, issue advocacy and regional
summits, we're proud to provide the training,
connections and support to help hundreds of
citizens turn their concern into action.
But we need your help. As a
non-profit organization, our only funding comes
from organizations and individuals like you who
care deeply about the health of Minnesota's lakes
and rivers. Please help us by
becoming a supporting member today. And if you're
already a member, please consider an extra gift to
help us improve and expand our services. Your gift
is fully tax-deductible. We have a
long list of accomplishments for 2008, but an even
longer list of goals for 2009. There are so many
concerned citizens out there who could benefit
from the specialized training and assistance that
MN Waters offers. Please help us reach out and
empower this vital workforce to help protect and
improve our lakes and
rivers. Click
here to join or donate online, or mail your
check to Minnesota Waters, 720 W. St. Germain,
Suite 143, St. Cloud, MN 56301. Thank
you in advance for your generous gift.
Kind Regards, Marian

PROPOSED FUEL STORAGE
FACILITY FOR
ST. PAUL UP FOR PUBLIC
REVIEW |
|
CHRIS HAVENS, Star Tribune
The Marathon Petroleum Company is proposing
to build a new fuel storage facility beside the
Mississippi River, east of the St. Paul Downtown
Airport. The company would construct a
fenced rail yard adjacent to the Canadian Pacific
Railway yard between Hwy. 61 and the river. Rail
cars would be used to hold liquid petroleum gas,
asphalt and ethanol. The proposed rail yard would
hold up to 170 rail cars -- empty, partly full or
full -- for a storage capacity of about 8.4
million gallons. The empty rail cars would have
previously held asphalt, roofing flux, sulfur and
other caustic substances. Because there's a
potential for significant environmental effects,
the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is
seeking public comment on an initial environmental
review of the project. The deadline for comments
is Dec. 3. READ
